Cecil "Hutch" Hutcherson and Julia married in 1953 and built a life rooted in hard work and shared ambition. Raised on a farm, Hutch began his grocery career at 16 with The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company (A&P), eventually managing stores for 22 years and opening new locations in Emporia and Virginia Beach. Julia worked as a skilled bookkeeper and office manager, supporting both business and family. Together, they raised their daughter, Sharon, and son, Tommy, and dreamed of one day running a store of their own.
That dream came true in 1983 when they found the Ocracoke Variety Store. Taking a leap of faith, they moved to Ocracoke—Tommy was 18, and Sharon had just graduated from college. The family settled into their new home right behind the store. Together, Julia and Hutch poured their hearts into the business, working side by side to transform it into a beloved community staple. Their dedication, warmth, and hard work made the store more than just a place to shop—it became a gathering spot where neighbors and visitors alike felt welcomed and valued.
Since then, the Variety Store has been a cornerstone of the Ocracoke community, open every day except Christmas. Although Tommy thought he'd only stay on the island for a few years, he loved it so much he never left. For him, working in the store was never a chore—it was a privilege.
Hutch passed away in March 2006, and Julia in 2024, but their legacy of dedication and service continues to inspire everything we do. Their daughter Sharon eventually moved to Virginia Beach, where she now owns Topiaries, a beloved gift shop on Pacific Avenue. Tommy continues the family legacy, running the Ocracoke Variety Store to this day.
Ocracoke welcomed us with open arms, and we’ve spent decades welcoming others in return. Whether you're a longtime local or a visitor discovering the island, we’re here to serve you with the same warmth and dedication that has defined our family for generations.
